Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Unlike resizing, cropping does not resample anything — it selects a rectangle of the original pixels and discards the rest, so every surviving pixel is bit-for-bit what it was. The result is a smaller image at exactly the original sharpness, which is why cropping to reframe is always better than resizing to reframe.
Should I crop before or after resizing?
Crop first. Cropping changes the aspect ratio, and resizing afterwards lets you hit an exact target size with no stretch and no unwanted trim. Doing it the other way round means spending quality resizing pixels you are about to throw away.
Which aspect ratio should I pick?
1:1 for avatars, Instagram posts and product thumbnails. 16:9 for video, monitors and YouTube thumbnails. 9:16 for Stories, Reels and phone wallpapers. 3:2 matches DSLR sensors and standard photo prints, and 4:3 matches older cameras and presentation slides. Choose Free when composition matters more than the container.
Does cropping remove EXIF data?
Yes. Cropping re-encodes the image, which strips camera model, lens, timestamps and GPS coordinates along the way. That is usually a privacy win — phone photos routinely carry the exact location they were taken, and most people do not want that attached to something they are about to post publicly. Keep a copy of the original if you need the metadata.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The preview and the crop both run entirely in your browser using your own device's processor. Nothing is transmitted, which matters for photos of documents, ID cards or anything else you would not hand to an unfamiliar server. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
