Questions
What is the sales tax rate in Quebec?
14.975% in total. Quebec charges 5% GST plus 9.975% QST. Both apply to the pre-tax price — QST stopped compounding on top of GST on 1 January 2013, so the combined rate is 14.975%, not the 14.98%+ that older calculators produce. On a $100 purchase that comes to $14.97 in tax and $114.97 to pay.
How do I work out the pre-tax price from a Quebec receipt?
Divide the total by 1.14975 — that is 1 plus the combined rate as a decimal. Switch this calculator to "Remove tax" and it does it for you, then splits the result back into its components. Do not subtract 14.975% from the total: that gives the wrong answer, because the tax was charged on the smaller pre-tax figure, not on the total.
Does QST get charged on top of the GST?
Not any more. Until 1 January 2013 QST was calculated on the GST-inclusive amount, which compounded the two and produced an effective rate above 14.975%. Since then both taxes apply to the pre-tax price, so the combined rate is exactly 14.975%. Calculators that were never updated still overstate Quebec tax slightly — if yours gives a number above 14.975%, it is using the old rule.
Do I have to register to collect GST + QST?
Once your business passes $30,000 in taxable revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters you must register for GST/HST — that threshold is federal and applies in Quebec like everywhere else. Below it registration is voluntary, and often still worth it, because registering lets you claim input tax credits on the tax you pay to suppliers. QST has its own separate registration and its own rules.
Is this calculator up to date?
Rates here are current for 2026. The most recent change was Nova Scotia's HST falling from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025, so any calculator still showing 15% for Nova Scotia is stale. Sales tax rates change rarely but they do change — for a filing or an invoice that matters, confirm against the Canada Revenue Agency's published rates.

Sales tax in Quebec
Quebec charges 5% GST plus 9.975% QST. Both apply to the pre-tax price — QST stopped compounding on top of GST on 1 January 2013, so the combined rate is 14.975%, not the 14.98%+ that older calculators produce.
That means 14.975% on top of the ticket price. On a $50 purchase you pay $7.49 in tax; on $1,000 you pay $149.75.

Backing tax out of a total
This is where most people get it wrong. If a receipt says $113 including 13% HST, the pre-tax price is not $113 minus 13%. That would give $98.31, which is too low, because the 13% was charged on the smaller pre-tax figure rather than on the total. Divide instead: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00.
Switch the calculator to “Remove tax” and it does that division, then splits the result back into its federal and provincial components — which is what you need for an expense claim or an input tax credit.
Quebec, and the change most calculators missed
Until 1 January 2013, QST was calculated on the GST-inclusive amount, so the two taxes compounded and the true combined rate was slightly above the sum of the parts. That stopped: both now apply to the pre-tax price, making the combined rate exactly 14.975%. Plenty of calculators were never updated. If one gives you a Quebec figure higher than 14.975%, it is still applying the pre-2013 rule.
Which province’s rate applies?
Generally the province where the customer takes delivery — the place of supply — not where the seller is based. An Alberta business shipping goods to Ontario charges Ontario’s 13% HST, not Alberta’s 5%. For digital products and services the rules turn on the customer’s usual address, and since 2021 they catch non-resident sellers too.
Some goods are zero-rated or exempt everywhere: basic groceries, prescription drugs, most medical devices, and residential rent among them. Several provinces add their own point-of-sale rebates on top — Ontario, for instance, rebates the provincial portion on children’s clothing, books and prepared food under $4, effectively dropping those to 5%.
Registering as a business
Once your taxable revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, GST/HST registration is mandatory. Below that it is voluntary — and often still worth doing, because registering lets you claim input tax credits on the tax you pay to suppliers. PST, RST and QST have their own separate registrations and thresholds.
Rates on this page are current for 2026. The last change was Nova Scotia’s HST falling from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025. For anything you are filing, confirm against the Canada Revenue Agency’s published rates — this is an estimate, not tax advice.
