How much smaller will the JPEG be?

Usually dramatically — TIFFs are often ten to thirty times the size of an equivalent JPEG, because they store pixels with little or no compression at up to 16 bits per channel. A 40 MB scan commonly lands between 1 and 3 MB. The exact figure depends far more on what the image contains than on the formats involved.

Will converting TIFF to JPG make the file smaller?

Usually, yes. A 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB as TIFF and around 3.2 MB as JPG — about 91% smaller. Because JPG is a lossy format you can trade quality for size, so the exact result depends on the quality setting you pick.

Does converting TIFF to JPG lose quality?

A little, by design. TIFF is lossless and JPG is lossy, so some detail is discarded in exchange for a much smaller file. At quality 80–90 the result is visually indistinguishable from the original for photographs. For screenshots, logos or anything with sharp text, stay with a lossless format instead — lossy compression creates visible halos around hard edges.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency cannot be preserved. Any transparent or semi-transparent pixels are composited onto a solid background — white by default — before encoding. If transparency matters, convert to PNG or WebP instead, both of which support it fully.

Why won't my browser display a TIFF?

No major browser supports TIFF — it was designed for print and archival workflows, not the web, and its many optional variants make it awkward to implement. Scanners and professional cameras still produce them, which is why conversion is usually the fastest route. Note that a multi-page TIFF holds several images; only the first page is converted here.

Why people convert TIFF to JPG

The same file nothing will open, but here the destination is an email, an upload form or a phone — somewhere a 40 MB archival scan is unwelcome.

JPEG if the TIFF holds a photograph or a photographic scan. If it holds a scanned document, text or line art, convert to PNG instead: JPEG puts halos around every letter, which looks poor and measurably degrades OCR accuracy.

Worth knowing: This is the first lossy step for a file that was probably created precisely to avoid one. Keep the TIFF — it is your archival master, and you cannot get it back from the JPEG.

These are order-of-magnitude figures for one kind of image — your own results will vary a great deal, because flat colour, text and line art behave nothing like photographic detail, and the quality slider moves the figure substantially.

Every test image got smaller, though by very different margins — flat colour and text behave nothing like photographic detail, so treat the closest row to your own content as the useful one. Measured in Chrome 150.0.7871.46; other browsers encode slightly differently.

What to watch out for

  • Lossy — quality degrades a little every time you re-save
  • No transparency; transparent pixels are flattened to a solid colour
  • Visible ringing and blocking around sharp text and hard edges
  • Roughly 30% larger than WebP at matching visual quality
  • Transparency is lost. TIFF supports an alpha channel and JPG does not, so transparent pixels are flattened onto a solid background colour. Pick the background above before converting, or convert to PNG or WebP instead.

About the two formats

TIFF is the archival and print standard: lossless, capable of 16 bits per channel, CMYK colour and multiple pages in a single file. It is also completely unsupported by web browsers, which is the usual reason people need to convert one — a scanner or a printer handed them a TIFF and nothing will open it.

JPEG has been the default photo format for three decades, and its compatibility is unmatched — if a device can display an image at all, it can display a JPEG. The trade-offs are that it discards detail permanently on every save, and it has no transparency channel at all, so anything transparent becomes a solid background.
