How many tonnes are in a kilogram?
One kilogram is 0.001 tonnes. To convert any amount, multiply by 0.001. Going the other way, one tonne is 1000 kilograms.
What is the formula to convert kg to t?
Multiply the kilogram figure by 0.001. So t = kg × 0.001. For a quick mental estimate, dividing by about 1000 gets you close enough for most everyday purposes.
What does a kilogram actually look like?
One kilogram is a litre of water, near enough. The kilogram was redefined in 2019 in terms of the Planck constant, retiring the platinum-iridium cylinder in Paris that had defined it since 1889.
And what is a tonne?
One tonne is a small car. The tonne — metric ton — is exactly 1,000 kilograms. It differs from the US short ton (907 kg) and the UK long ton (1,016 kg), which is a genuine source of freight errors.
Is a tonne the same as a ton?
No. The tonne, or metric ton, is exactly 1,000 kilograms — about 2,205 pounds. The US short ton is 2,000 pounds, roughly 907 kg, and the UK long ton is 2,240 pounds, roughly 1,016 kg. The three differ by up to 12%, which is a genuine and expensive source of error in freight and construction. If a document just says "ton", find out which one it means.
Is this conversion exact?
Yes. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the imperial and metric systems are related by exact definitions rather than measurements — the inch is exactly 25.4 mm and the pound exactly 0.45359237 kg. Everything derived from those, including this conversion, is therefore exact. Round at the end rather than partway through, since rounding kg before converting introduces an error the conversion then multiplies.
About kg to t
How to convert kilograms to tonnes
Multiply by 0.001. One kilogram is 0.001 tonnes, and one tonne is 1000 kilograms.
t = kg × 0.001
Worked example
10 kg = 0.01 t. For a sense of scale, one kilogram is a litre of water, near enough, and one tonne is a small car.

Getting it right
This conversion is exact by definition, so the only limit on accuracy is how many digits you keep. Round at the end rather than partway through — rounding kg to a whole number before converting introduces an error that the conversion then multiplies.
