How many kelvin are in a degree Fahrenheit?

Temperature does not work that way — the scales have different zero points, so there is no single ratio between them. One degree Fahrenheit is not a fixed number of kelvin; you have to apply both a scale and an offset. At the freezing point of water, 273.15 K corresponds to the same physical temperature.

Why can't I just convert a 10-degree difference the same way?

Because a temperature and a temperature difference are different things. Converting 10 °C gives 50 °F, but a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F — the offset applies to a point on the scale, not to an interval. For differences, use only the scaling part: multiply by 9/5 going from Celsius to Fahrenheit, and leave the +32 out. Mixing these up is the single most common temperature error.

Is this conversion exact?

How to convert degrees Fahrenheit to kelvin

Temperature is the one dimension where you cannot simply multiply. The scales do not share a zero point, so every conversion needs both a scaling step and an offset — which is why °F and K cannot be related by a single factor the way metres and feet can.

K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15

Worked example

72 °F = 295.3722 K. For a sense of scale, one degree Fahrenheit is 32 is freezing, 68 is a mild room, 98.6 is body temperature, and one kelvin is 273.15 is freezing, 293 is a mild room.

Getting it right

Because temperature conversion involves an offset as well as a scale, a difference of 10 degrees is not the same on both scales — 10 °C of change is 18 °F of change. Converting a temperature and converting a temperature difference are two different operations, and mixing them up is the most common error here.
