How do I write a page selection?

The same way as any print dialog: 1-3, 5, 8-10. Order is preserved exactly as typed, so 5,1,3 extracts those pages in that order — which makes extraction double as a quick reordering tool. Duplicates are dropped keeping the first position, reversed ranges like 5-2 are read as 2-5, and pages beyond the end of the document are ignored rather than causing an error.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied across byte-for-byte with their original fonts, vector artwork and image resolution intact. Nothing is re-encoded at any point, so there is no generation loss no matter how many times you split and re-split a document.

Why do the split files add up to more than the original?

Because each output carries its own copy of the fonts and resources its pages reference. A font embedded once in a 20-page document has to be embedded in every part that uses it, so splitting into twenty single pages produces twenty files totalling well over the original size. This is normal and does not indicate anything wrong.

Can I use a password-protected PDF?

Not one with an open password — the file has to be decrypted before its pages can be read, so remove the password in your PDF reader first. Files that are merely restricted from printing or editing, with an owner password but no open password, usually work without any trouble.

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs inside your browser using your own device's processor, so your documents never travel over the network. That matters for contracts, statements, medical records and tax filings — the documents people most often need to edit are exactly the ones you should not hand to an unfamiliar server. There is no upload wait, no size cap, and nothing for us to store or leak.

Two different jobs

“Split” means two things depending on what you are trying to do, and this tool does both.

Extract a range pulls out the pages you name and leaves you with one new document. Use it when you need pages 4–9 of a report, or just the signature page of a contract.
Split into parts chops the whole document into equal chunks — one file per page, or one per two pages, or whatever you set. Use it when a bundle needs separating into its constituent documents, or when an upload form has a page limit.

How page selections are read

The selection box takes the same syntax as every print dialog: 1-3, 5, 8-10. A few details worth knowing:

Order is preserved. Typing 5,1,3 gives you those pages in that order, not sorted. That makes extraction double as a quick reordering tool.
Duplicates are dropped, keeping the first position — so 3,1,3 gives pages 3 and 1.
Reversed ranges are read forwards. 5-2 is treated as 2–5, because that is invariably what someone means when they type it.
Out-of-range pages are ignored rather than causing an error, so 8-20 on a ten-page document quietly gives you 8–10.

Quality is untouched

Splitting copies page content across byte-for-byte. Text stays selectable, vector artwork stays sharp, embedded fonts come along, and images are never recompressed. Nothing is re-encoded, so no quality is lost at any point.

One consequence to expect: the parts do not add up to the original size. Each output carries its own copy of the fonts and resources its pages reference, so splitting a 20 MB document into twenty pages produces twenty files totalling more than 20 MB.

Nothing is uploaded

The whole operation runs in your browser using your own device’s processor. The documents people most often need to edit — contracts, bank statements, medical records, tax packages — are exactly the ones you should not hand to an unfamiliar server. There is no upload wait, no size ceiling imposed by a free tier, and nothing left in a temporary directory afterwards. Disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
